TNSR® version 21.11 is in the throes of rigorous testing, bug fixing, and more testing before we make it available, hopefully within a few short weeks. This isn't just a normal version update, this version of TNSR will be available on both CentOS and Ubuntu to facilitate the migration to Ubuntu since Red Hat is about to stop providing updates to CentOS Linux 8. More information about TNSR CentOS to Ubuntu can be found on this FAQ page.
In addition to Ubuntu, version 21.11 also contains a lot of improvements, updates, and bug fixes, so TNSR customers (and TNSR Home+Lab users) should upgrade when it is released. Watch our blog for updates and release availability.
IPng Networks Reviews the Netgate 6100
Our co-founder and CTO, Jim Thompson, doesn't miss much in the world of tech news. So when he stumbled upon a well-written product review by Pim van Pelt over at IPng Networks in Switzerland, he contacted Pim and said, "Hey, I like your work! You ought to take the Netgate 6100 around the block for a drive, and more specifically - see how fast it gets if you run TNSR® software on it." Pim accepted the challenge, here is his review. Not to bury the headline...the Netgate 6100 running pfSense Plus software delivered 623 Kpps on a single core. But, when loaded with VPP (TNSR software leverages VPP and will deliver the same results), Pim measured 5.01 Mpps - an 8x jump over pfSense software!
The world is moving fast towards 1 and 10 Gbps network connections. And the world wants affordable routers that can make full use of those connections. TNSR vRouter software on a Netgate 6100 is going to be a killer answer!
Pim's review includes lots of details, screenshots, and performance graphs. So get yourself a cup of coffee and read the review, it's a good read!
User Space vs Kernel Space Processing. Come Again?
In our recent blog post, we tackle User Space vs Kernel Space Processing. What do these two processing methods really mean and why should you care? Here's what you will learn from this blog:
What is Kernel Space Processing?
Kernel Processing and Network Functions
What is User Space Processing?
Why Should You Care?
How TNSR leverages User Space Processing
It may sound like geek-speak. But we think readers appreciate it when we can remove the black magic. Read the blog and tell us what you think!
Every month we are grateful to add new customers. And most come by way of pfSense Plus software. To that end, you might never have heard of TNSR software. And the above articles might sound like Greek. Not to worry. Take a look at the TNSR Overview video on our YouTube channel. It is the first in our TNSR Software Education Series and provides a high-level overview of TNSR software. There are a few other quick, easy-to-digest videos available there, and we keep adding to the family as we can.

The USNS Mercy - a 65,000 ton converted oil tanker that can host over 1,000 hospital beds (including 80 intensive care beds). It made national news when it was deployed to the Port of Los Angeles to help the Southern California region cope with COVID-19.
With any hospital, secure networking communications are essential. The Mercy’s network must accommodate not only official naval vessel communications, but also civilian medical staff and patient communications. As with numerous US government agencies, the US Navy is a pfSense Plus software user, and so is the USNS Mercy.
Automatic Configuration Backup (ACB) has been available as a pfSense package for many years. In pfSense version 2.4.4 it is available as a core component of pfSense software, no package required.
When a change is made to the configuration on a firewall, AutoConfigBackup automatically encrypts the contents with the passphrase entered in the AutoConfigBackup settings and then uploads the backup over HTTPS to Netgate servers. This gives instant, secure offsite backups of a firewall with no user intervention.
We created a short video to complement our documentation to walk users through using ACB pfSense plus software.
Customers love the Netgate 1100 with pfSense Plus software, it's a top-seller in our secure networking appliance lineup. But why is it so popular? A growing number of edge firewall buyers - especially with the pandemic-induced exodus from the office - want a true business-caliber product in terms of feature set, performance, and reliability - and for a price that easily beats consumer-grade offers over at Best Buy. Packaged into a visually sleek and compact form factor - with low power draw and silent fan-less operation - the product is well-suited for desktop, wall, or shelf deployments. The Netgate 1100 features:
Netgate Tech Tip of the Month: Automation with the TNSR RESTCONF API
This planet of ours is faced-paced and brutally competitive. In the more specific realm of secure networking, it’s all about increased speed for lower cost. And a big part of cost is network operations. We haven’t met a customer yet who doesn’t constantly seek ways to automate network ops to be more customer responsive at a lower total cost of ownership.
GUIs are nice -and for many still necessary. But others are racing to Ansible, Rudder, SaltStack, Puppet, Chef, and others for automated provisioning, configuration management, and application deployment. TNSR is equipped with a REST API - ready for you to automate secure networking orchestration however you like. Learn more and check out a complete RESTCONF service configuration example here.
