Company Introduces Free Home and Lab Use Product, and Flattens TNSR Business Subscription Pricing

September 10, 2020 (AUSTIN, TX) Netgate, the leading provider of open-source secure networking solutions, today announced a free version of TNSR for home and lab users, and a shift from bandwidth-based subscription pricing to simple instance-based subscription pricing, the latter now available for as low as $499 per instance per year. TNSR is a high-performance software router based on FD.io’s Vector Packet Processing (VPP), of which Netgate is a leading contributor. TNSR delivers extraordinary packet processing performance in software, enabling businesses to fulfill edge networking needs far less expensively than with legacy brand solutions.

The company has successfully deployed TNSR as an edge router solution on-premises and in the cloud for enterprise, education and government clients. While customer needs vary, the common thread is growing demand for a software-based router solution that can be easily deployed on low-cost commodity hardware, easily scaled as bandwidth needs increase, and an ability to be managed via traditional router command line interface, but ready for network management orchestration via an API.

Having a historic focus on bringing powerful secure networking solutions to market - and working closely with TNSR early adopters - the company has instituted three key changes:

  • Replacement of bandwidth-based pricing with instance-based pricing. Customers can freely define their own hardware instance - bare metal or virtual machine, any number of cores, any supported CPU vintage, and any amount of memory necessary to drive 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps, 100 Gbps or more of high-performance routing. They need not be concerned about price escalation as bandwidth needs grow.
  • TNSR Business pricing has been reset to simply $499 per instance per year (including TAC Pro Support) or $899 per instance per year (including TAC Enterprise Support).
  • Introduction of TNSR Home+Lab, free to use software for non-commercial purposes. The company has discontinued its previous sales-gated evaluation process, now confident the product is ready for a more frictionless experience. Users need only register and agree to the evaluation agreement to download the software.

“As a VoIP service provider, large numbers of fast and secure connections are everything,” said Michael Jennings, Voxtelesys COO. “We are thrilled with the performance of TNSR, especially where we apply it for fast IPsec connections in our data center infrastructure. With the commercial changes the company is making, broader xSP use would not surprise me.”

“We’ve always had two fundamental things in mind,” said Jamie Thompson, Netgate CEO. “First, we believe in leveraging open-source software technology to disrupt the status quo of high-priced, vendor lock-in solutions - especially as hardware prices continue to plummet. Nowhere is this more apparent than edge routing, where Netgate has witnessed years of evolution through pfSense® software deployments. Second, we know the world is full of savvy networking and security users - whether professional or hobbyist. We’ve always treasured our relationship with these users and believe now is the time to give them free use of powerful routing technology - and ask their help to make TNSR a better solution as time rolls on, just as they have with pfSense software.”

TNSR is available as a bare metal image, bundled with the Netgate XG-1537, or XG-1541, and on AWS and Azure.
